Wireless Timing Systems and what that's all about!

With advances in radios and better electronics, wireless technologies are now considered standard solutions for competition level Motorsports.  However, as with most things, not all wireless systems are up to par.

We had been a development partner with RaceAmerica from 1994 through 2025 but as of 2026, with new ownership at RaceAmerica, that partnership has dissolved. From 2005 to 2025 we offered various RaceAmerica's T-LINK solutions for all of our products. With new ownership, and their focus on other products, we no longer support their systems moving onward.

Since the beginning of 2026, AXWare Systems has been promoting wireless technologies from a Switzerland company called FDS Timing particularly in support their FDS Motorsports components.  FDS products are developed by engineers from Tag Heuer, and are supported through their US distributor Reliable Racing, which we are partnered with.

Motorsports Timing Systems must provide repeatable, accurate, and consistent timing performance.

This requires hardware and software as a system to meet those goals! Reputations matter, and so does the equipment. Competition Level Systems is what we are about.

The cheap and although popular systems from Polaris cannot and do not provide Motorsports competition grade solutions.  It is impossible based on the substandard components and features. It is physically impossible to meet Motorsports needs.  Those systems work fine for horse racing, barrel racing etc, but not for Motorsports where 1/1000sec matters.  They will throw up numbers that can fluctuate up to 0.25sec at random, including missed triggers.

If competition is your goal, with a true level playing field, these systems are not the answer and fail miserable. It does matter!

FDS Systems design their components from a racing perspective and thus performance follows. Each component has a racing heritage and the system as a whole follows with competition level performance.  It sets your events up for a true level competitive environment so that the drivers are measured for their performance.

There is one other aspect of Timing Systems that needs a rational definition and explanation. Accuracy!

Accuracy - what does that really mean?

Timers vary in many different ways and one of the more confusing terms that are thrown around is the word accuracy.

The technical definition is simple - the degree to which the result of a measurement, calculation, or specification conforms to the correct value or a standard.

In Motorsports this requires a system approach, all components from the sensors to recording the timing trips, must be consistent, repeatable, lack latency (no timing fluctuations) and in most sports, including most motorsports, expressed with the need to have accuracy of 1/1000sec (0.001sec).  That requires a system based approach that cannot ignore any factors of the any components, including sensors, triggers, time keeping, and the wireless components as well.

Cheap, inexpensive based hardware systems are less then adequate for competition timing requirements.  Their hardware specifications cannot provide 1/1000sec simply based on their hardware components. The sum of their components makes it impossible to be accurate. Polaris (and the like) based systems were great for horse barrel racing but fall short of the demands for true motorsports competition level events.

AXWare Systems takes great pride in holding to a true standard that supports only competition grade systems. Our business must conform to a high level of accuracy in order to represent the Timing demands that our clients expect.

FDS Timing/Motorsports allows us to move towards the future and continue our support of true competition grade hardware and our core requirements for Motorsports timing systems. We are proud to continue our journey in providing timing systems that match the needs of our clients and provide the flexibility and robustness for timing and event management solutions.
